目と鼻の間にある涙嚢に炎症が起きた状態
　涙嚢（るいのう）炎とは、涙嚢が化膿（かのう）する病気。涙は上まぶたの外方にある涙腺で作られ、それが角膜を潤して、目頭の上下の瞼縁（けんえん）にある涙点から涙小管と呼ばれる細い管に入って、目と鼻の間にある涙嚢に集まります。この部分に炎症が起きた状態であり、慢性涙嚢炎、急性涙嚢炎に分けられます。
　慢性涙嚢炎の場合、多くは中年以後の女性にみられ、涙嚢に細菌が繁殖して膿汁（のうじゅう）を作り、涙嚢部を押すと、膿汁や汚れた涙が逆流してきます。涙目をそのままにしておくと、この慢性涙嚢炎になりやすくなります。
　治療は、抗生物質や消毒剤などで涙嚢を洗ったり、プジーという細い針金で涙道を通したりします。新生児では、これで大抵治ります。大人では、一時的には効果がありますが、完全には治りにくいケースも多く、涙嚢から鼻腔へ涙の道を作る手術が行われ、効果を上げています。
　急性涙嚢炎の場合、慢性涙嚢炎が急に悪化したもので、急に涙嚢部が強く痛み、その部分の皮膚が赤くなり、はれてきます。時には、発赤とはれがほおにまで広がり、痛みのために夜も眠れなくなります。
　放置すると、涙嚢が破れて膿（うみ）が出て治りますが、跡が残ります。はれたら早く、医師の治療を受けることです。
　先天的に涙道の一部に通過障害を持つ新生児にも、急性涙嚢炎がみられます。出生直後から、流涙などがみられますが、これに細菌感染が加わると発症します。症状が変化しやすいため、すぐに専門医に相談を。治療には、化学療法が行われます。
