■マラリア新ワクチン、ガーナが世界初の承認 80％弱の予防効果を期待 [健康ダイジェスト]
イギリスのオックスフォード大学は15日までに、西アフリカのガーナが同大学開発のマラリア用の高性能な新ワクチンを世界で初めて承認したと発表しました。複数回の接種で、80％弱の予防効果を期待できるとみられます。既存のマラリアワクチンの予防効果は30％程度でした。
ガーナの隣国ブルキナファソで行われた小規模な臨床試験で、高い予防効果が確認されました。
世界保健機関（ＷＨＯ）は予防効果が少なくとも75％あるマラリアワクチンの開発目標を掲げてきました。今回のワクチンは目標を初めて満たす水準となり、マラリアがまん延する発展途上国で広く普及する可能性があります。
蚊が媒介する寄生虫が引き起こすマラリアは、毎年２億人以上の感染が報告され、その94%はアフリカ大陸です。重症化すると多臓器不全や脳症を起こし、年間40万人以上が死亡しますが、その約３分の２、26万人以上は５歳未満の子供たちです。
