　イスラエルのナフタリ・ベネット首相は29日、８月１日から60歳以上の市民を対象に、アメリカのファイザー製の新型コロナウイルスワクチンの３回目接種（ブースター接種）を開始すると発表しました。ワクチンを３回接種するのは、世界初の試み。
　ベネット首相によると、３回目の接種の対象となるのは、少なくとも５カ月前に２回目の接種を受けた60歳以上の市民。
　国民の理解を得るため、９月に61歳の誕生日を迎えるアイザック・ヘルツォーク大統領が、30日にまず最初に追加接種を受けます。
　イスラエルでは感染者が１日当たり2000人を超えており、感染力の強いデルタ型変異ウイルスへの懸念が高まっています。
　ベネット首相は29日、「時間がたつにつれて免疫力が低下することがわかっている」とし、「免疫力を再び高め、感染や重症化の可能性を大幅に減らすことが追加接種の目的だ」と述べました
　首相によると、免疫が低下した約2000人がすでに３回目の接種を受けており、重篤な副作用はなかったといいます。
　現時点で追加接種を承認している国はほかになく、専門家は３回目の接種で感染者数が減らせるかどうかはまだ不透明だとしています。
　イスラエル当局は６月に、感染者の増加を受け、公共の密閉空間でのマスク着用を再び義務付けました。
　同国はパンデミック（世界的大流行）対応において、世界で最も成功を収めている国の１つ。世界最速のペースでワクチン接種を進め、人口約930万人の半数以上が１回あるいは２回の接種を終えている。
